Something unexpected often happens when you really do the work and change your life. You have a new normal. You look at things with an eye for what CAN be done. You feel invigorated and uplifted. You start to forget what you were like before. As a coach, this can be both gratifying and also tricky. People can get so excited and see their new path so clearly that they can forget how far they have come. They might even avoid thinking about what it was like before because it feels negative thinking about those long ago days of confusion, doubt, sadness or discomfort.
But reviewing the past with an eye for patterns and pit-falls is actually being pro-active. We are creatures of habit. Learning and growing from our past is critical in the effort to not repeat those limiting patterns. As uncomfortable as it is to revisit how we used to be, we need to be mindful of how we got lost in the first place. What led us there? Who were we being when we made those choices? What old patterns can we see? By doing this more difficult work, we can save ourselves from falling into old patterns unconsciously in the future. Our new marvelous normal is still ours, however being mindful of where we came from only strengthens our position.
